Independence Day is officially one week away! As you finalize your cookout menus, you probably already have the burgers, hot dogs, and heavily frosted flag cakes planned out.

But what about the side dishes? Traditional 4th of July food can be incredibly heavy and loaded with artificial food dyes. If you want to bring a dish that is visually stunning, 100% naturally colored, and incredibly refreshing in the summer heat, you need this Red, White, and Blue Caprese Salad.
It is the absolute best of all fourth of july food ideas because it requires absolutely ZERO cooking and takes 5 minutes to assemble. The combination of sweet blueberries, savory tomatoes, and creamy mozzarella is a flavor explosion that will have everyone at the BBQ asking for the recipe!
π The Ingredients (The 100% Natural Patriotic Trio)
Forget the artificial red and blue food coloring! Mother Nature provided the perfect festive colors for us.
- The RED:Β 1 pintΒ Cherry or Grape Tomatoes, halved.Β (Cherry tomatoes hold their shape and won’t make the salad watery!).
- The WHITE:Β 1 tub (8 oz)Β Fresh Mini Mozzarella Pearls (Bocconcini), drained.
- The BLUE:Β 1 pintΒ Fresh Blueberries, washed and dried.
- The GREEN:Β 1/4 cupΒ Fresh Basil Leaves, thinly sliced (Chiffonade).
- The Magic Dressing:
- 2 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
- 1 tbsp Balsamic Glaze (Use the thick, syrupy glaze, not liquid vinegar!).
- 1 tsp Honey (To balance the acidity).
- A pinch of flaky sea salt and black pepper.
π©βπ³ Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: The “Bone-Dry” Berry Hack (Crucial!) π
The most important step for this summer BBQ side dish is making sure your ingredients are dry. Wash your blueberries and tomatoes, but pat them completely dry with paper towels before mixing. If they are wet, the balsamic glaze won’t stick to them, and you will end up with a watery soup at the bottom of your bowl!
Step 2: Combine the Trio
In a large, beautiful serving bowl (white or clear glass works best to show off the colors!), combine the halved cherry tomatoes, the drained mozzarella pearls, and the dry blueberries.
Step 3: Whisk the Honey Balsamic
In a small jar, whisk together the olive oil and honey. Pour this mixture over the salad and toss gently to coat the fruit and cheese.
Step 4: The “Last Minute” Garnish Rule β±οΈ
You can prep the salad up to this point a few hours before your party! However, do not add the balsamic glaze or the fresh basil until right before serving!
Why? The acid in the balsamic will slowly turn the beautiful white mozzarella pearls brown, and the fresh basil will wilt and turn black if it sits in the oil too long.
Step 5: Drizzle and Serve! π
Right as you set the bowl on the picnic table, scatter the fresh basil ribbons over the top. Drizzle generously with the thick, dark balsamic glaze, and sprinkle with a pinch of flaky sea salt. Serve immediately alongside your grilled chicken or burgers!
