Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of Summer! Itโs the season for backyard cookouts, pool parties, and gathering with friends and family. But if you are assigned to bring dessert to the BBQ, you absolutely do not want to turn on a hot oven.

Enter the Summer Berry Trifle.
This stunning, layered, no-bake dessert is the ultimate Memorial Day food idea. With its vibrant red strawberries, fluffy white vanilla cream, and fresh blue blueberries, it is the perfect patriotic centerpiece for your table! Best of all, it looks like it took hours to make, but it comes together in just 15 minutes using a few clever grocery store shortcuts.
๐ The Ingredients (The “No-Bake” Shortcuts)
To keep this dessert stress-free, we are using a store-bought cake base. The magic is in the assembly!
- 1 Store-bought Angel Food Cakeย (or Pound Cake).ย Pro-Tip: Angel food cake is lighter and absorbs the cream beautifully, while pound cake is denser and sweeter. Pick your favorite!ย Cut it into bite-sized 1-inch cubes.
- 2 pintsย Fresh Strawberries, washed, hulled, and sliced.
- 1 pintย Fresh Blueberries, washed and dried.
- The Creamy Filling:
- 1 box (3.4 oz)ย Instant Vanilla Pudding mix (or Cheesecake flavor!).
- 2 cupsย Cold Milk.
- 1 tub (8 oz)ย Cool Whip, thawed in the fridge (or 3 cups of homemade whipped cream).
๐ฉโ๐ณ Step-by-Step Instructions (The Art of Layering)
To make a trifle look professional, you need a large, clear glass trifle bowl. The secret is making sure the fruit touches the glass on the outside edges!
Step 1: Whip the Cream Mixture
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cold milk and the instant vanilla pudding mix for about 2 minutes until it becomes thick. Gently fold in the thawed Cool Whip using a rubber spatula until the mixture is light, fluffy, and completely smooth.
Step 2: The First Cake Layer
Place half of your cubed angel food cake into the bottom of your glass trifle bowl. Press it down slightly to create an even base.
Step 3: The Strawberry Layer (The Visual Hack! ๐)
Here is the trick to a beautiful presentation: Take your sliced strawberries and stand them upright, pressed flat against the inside of the glass bowl in a circle. Once your perimeter is built, dump the rest of the strawberries into the center over the cake.
Step 4: The Cream Layer
Spread half of your creamy vanilla pudding mixture over the strawberries. Use a spoon to push it all the way to the edges so it seals the layer.
Step 5: Repeat with Blueberries
Add the remaining half of your cake cubes. Follow with a thick layer of fresh blueberries (again, making sure plenty of them are pressed against the glass so people can see the blue layer!).
Step 6: The Final Top
Spread the remaining cream mixture over the blueberries. Smooth the top nicely.
Step 7: The Patriotic Garnish ๐บ๐ธ
Use your leftover strawberries and blueberries to decorate the top. You can arrange them in concentric circles, or get festive and create an American flag pattern (a square of blueberries in the corner, and stripes of sliced strawberries!).
๐ง Make-Ahead Tips & Storage:
Do not serve this immediately! A trifle is 10x better when it has time to rest. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and chill it in the refrigerator for at least 2 to 4 hours before the party. This allows the cake cubes to soak up the creamy pudding and the fruit juices. It will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 2 days!
